|The 155 Seahawks fans the fire marshall will allow into Backstage Bar Grill in Culver City on Sunday simply can rival the noise of 67,000 in Seattle that make up arguably the best home field advantage in the NFL.
But this Southern California Seahawks fan group has carried on the loud tradition in a way Los Angeles in particular can appreciate.
The group founder, Cedric Morris, discovered a way for a voice in his fan group to reach millions of people. The 40 year old mechanical engineer was instrumental in landing Compton own Beverly Sherman, the mother of Seahawks flamboyant cornerback Richard Sherman, in a national Campbell Soup commercial.
He also made his group presence felt in Northern California, raising more than $2,800 for a Seahawks banner to be towed by a plane over Candlestick Park in San Francisco during a Seahawks victory over the 49ers in 2013. Morris and Travis Platt online fundraiser received more than double the requested amount of $1,300.
12th man, it just a different kind of bond, Morris said. group quickly turned from six guys into 40 people. Then there were lines out the door every Sunday. Then Mama Sherman came out and we have family members of other players that are regulars. The 2012 season when we got Russell Wilson is when it really got crazy. The Super Bowls, I mean it amazing to be a part of it.
What began as two men in pursuit of the largest TV in Culver City nine years ago has transformed into hundreds of Seahawks fans descending upon Backstage Bar Grill. Morris has brought so much business to the bar, he struck a deal for 15 percent off food and drinks for Seahawks fans on Sundays. He even provides wholesale authnetic jerseys overflow bars for those than can get in. Morris, a Salt Lake City native who adopted the Seahawks as soon as he became conscious at 8 years old, is quick to point out the irony that he is one of the few in the group not from Seattle.
Chris Pixley, 46, was technically the first member of the group. The Seattle native, who notes that he was born in the Children Hospital that Wilson visits every Tuesday, can easily explain the success of this fan group: The last time a team from Seattle won a championship before the Seahawks did so last year was the 1979 Supersonics NBA title.
just makes fans more ravenous, Pixley said. at a Seahawks game, I can compare it to anything. It like heaven on earth. When the whole place erupts, Cheap Pro Bowl Jerseys it a cathartic experience. You hugging total strangers around you. Our group does that for each other here. attended the NFC championship game in Seattle for the second consecutive season, witnessing the largest comeback in NFC Championship game history as the Seahawks erased a 12 point deficit in the final three minutes of the 28 22 overtime win over the Packers on Jan. 18 despite four interceptions by Wilson.
Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles whole bar was in tears, Morris said. be going back to the Super Bowl, it just amazing. Winning it last year, it was almost expected. But to have that ring on your finger, you can finally shut up a lot of 49ers fans who come in here with five of them. We want to get another one (on Sunday). 15 members of the Sherman family who have visited Backstage over the years will likely be in Arizona for the game. Beverly Sherman now has strong ties with the fan group that originally attracted her through Facebook. The group fan page has nearly 2,000 likes.
Morris mentioned to her in passing one Sunday that she should be the next mother to star in a Campbell Chunky Soup commercial. He began a Facebook campaign, found himself exchanging emails with Campbell CEO and even played a significant acting role in the commercial along with three other Seahawks fans.
The Southern California Seahawks fan group has used its reach for several charitable causes, receiving donations for the Wounded Warrior Project thanks to former Seahawks such as Chris Warren, Dave Craig and John L. Williams making appearances to sign autographs. A face painting event this year raised close to $500 for A Window Between Worlds, a nonprofit aiding domestic violence victims.
Plenty have taken notice, including Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, who several times has tweeted the group with nearly 3,000 twitter followers. Carroll daughter Jamie has watched Seahawks games at Backstage, as have the brother of defensive tackle cheap jeseys online Brandon Mebane, a Crenshaw High product, and the cousin of middle linebacker Bobby Wagner, an Ontario Colony High graduate.
Morris got close enough with Brandon Browner uncle that he found himself on the phone with the then suspended Seahawks safety at halftime of last season Super Bowl.
Morris and two others from the group have been to Richard Sherman birthday party the past two years.
people come down to the bar, Morris said, to see who is going to show up that day. the oversized inflated Seahawks player and their own 12th Man flag flying outside Backstage, it hard to miss.
